In Canada, the outdoor cooking season doesn’t typically last as long as most people would want. Also, during this time, there is always an outdoor kitchen that has to be closed until spring.
If you want to protect your outdoor kitchen, there are a couple of things that need to be done so that it could remain safe during the winter months. The veranda garden canopy is perfect for protecting your outdoor space from the elements while still having access to wonderful views.
Be sure to take some time to follow the steps listed below so that you can enjoy a longer-lasting outdoor kitchen.
When you do some of the work now, it reduces the setup time when you do get started in spring and want to have your first outdoor cookout.
Turn off the Water Supply to Your Outdoor Kitchen
This is one of the most crucial things you need to do to make your outdoor kitchen winter-proof.
When water lines become frozen during the winter, they can easily burst the pipes. This is extremely costly to fix and it can also easily damage anything that these lines are connected to such as your outdoor sink.
After you’ve turned off the outdoor water connection, make sure that you remove the water from your supply lines. This can be done by simply turning on the faucets on the connected sinks. Don’t forget to drain the water lines that you have connected to your ice maker and your fridge in your outdoor kitchen.
Ensure that Your Outdoor Kitchen Sink is Winterized
After you have taken off your water supply as well as drained all of the pipes and lines as stated above, there are a couple of other things you still need to do.
The outdoor sink in your kitchen needs to be protected even though it is made from stainless steel. You will need to cover it so that it isn’t exposed to the snow and cold in the winter.
The last thing you want is for the sink to fill with snow, water, sleet, etc. These things will enter your drainage and lead to a lot of issues. It is best to also use a sink cover as it will help prevent any debris from going into your pipes. This can be anything from pebbles, leaves, sticks, etc.
You should try to purchase a sink cover that is meant for your particular sink so that it fits well. Even if you have to pay a little extra, it is best to do so. This will ensure that it doesn’t degrade after a couple of years. Carbon fibre vinyl covers in particular are quite good and highly reliable.
Keep in mind that the cover you buy for your outdoor kitchen sink should also be able to cover the faucet. However, it may be best to remove the faucet during the winter and place it indoors.
Prepare Your Grill for the Winter
When the cooking season comes to an end, this is the best time to properly maintain and clean your outdoor grills. Taking good care of your grills will ensure that they are in the best possible condition after winter and in Spring.
In order to clean them, you should remove the grates and take your time while scrubbing. Do so until all of the food and grease are removed. For the best results, use a wire brush. Take note of all the areas on your grill that are difficult to reach and be sure to clean the burners as well. After you’ve completed cleaning the grill, be sure to apply stainless steel cleaner to thoroughly polish it.
According to numerous grill experts, you should always season the grill before you place it into storage during the winter. Once you’re done cleaning it, coat the grates as well as the burners with good-quality cooking oil and then put them back into place. Fire up the grill without any food on it and allow it to run for a bit and then turn it off. This will go a long way in protecting your grill from contaminants, rust, food, etc.
Once you’re done seasoning the grill, you will need to turn off the gas line. Of course, this is if you have a natural gas grill. After you’ve turned it off, disconnect it and make sure the openings are fully covered. This will prevent anything from getting inside.
